Vietnam gets serious about pangasius education

Vietnam’s pangasius industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 10 years. Totaling less than 35,000 metric tons in 2003, the country’s pangasius exports now exceed 600,000 metric tons annually, nearing 660,000 metric tons in 2010. Roughly three-quarters of pangasius exports go to the EU market, while about 12 percent end up in the U.S. market.

Perhaps a consequence of the industry’s explosive growth, education about the catfish-like species has lagged. But the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) is trying to do something about it. Read more of this post

MEP Mr Struan Stevenson learn about Pangasius farming

Members of the Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade (SEAT) project, met in Scotland recently to discuss the development of sustainable pangasius in Viet Nam. They invited MEP and Senior Vice President of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee Struan Stevenson to increase his understanding on safety and sustainability of pangasius.

In November 2010 Struan Stevenson added to a raft of criticism in the media over Pangasius production in Viet Nam and European imports of the finished product.

His comments in the European Parliament raised concerns over safety standards of the finished product and welfare standards of those working in the industry. The Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade (SEAT) project, led by the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University, is heavily involved in researching the burgeoning trade in Pangasius from Viet Nam. Mekong River delta focuses on agricultural and rural development

Mekong River delta provinces are focusing on agricultural production and the training of rural workers to create sustainable development for the region.

Leaders of provinces said that provinces would produce 2-3 rice seasons per year on nearly 2 million hectares of land, bringing rice production in a year to 3.8 million hectares, with a productivity of 21-22 million tons, satisfying the demand for export. Read more of this post

Vietnam: Seafood export targets by 2020

As the year 2010 is over, the Seafood Export Development Program in the period 2005- 2010 approved under the decision No.242/2006/QD-TTg dated October, 2006 has accomplished its final steps. It is time to go behind what has been achieved and what has not so as to set targets for the next 5 and 10 years.

Great achievements.

First of all, it is undeniable that the fisheries sector in the past years has still maintained its inherent growth, playing a leading role in the industrialization and modernization of the agriculture and rural areas, as well as drastically transforming itself into a major producing industry in the country’s economy in general. WWF campaign against pangasius gathers pace

The World Wildlife Fund seems to be pursuing a vendetta against Vietnam’s pangasius industry. First there was the saga late last year when the conservation organization placed the fish on its “red list” of species to avoid, which ignited an uproar. Now its “fish expert,” Catherine Zucco, has been actively involved in making a program denigrating the industry, which will air on German TV on 9 March.

Called “The Pangasius Lie,” two presenters from the NDR channel, Michael Höft and Christian Jentzsch, joined forces with Zucco to “research” pangasius in German supermarkets and in Vietnam where “90 percent of the pangasius fillets” sold in Germany are produced. Read more of this post

Private standards and related certification schemes are becoming significant features of international fish trade and marketing. They have emerged in areas where there is a perception that public regulatory frameworks are not achieving the desired outcomes, such as sustainability and responsible fisheries management. Their use is also becoming more common in efforts to ensure food safety, quality and environmental sustainability in the growing aquaculture industry.

Private standards are now a key mechanism for large-scale retailers and commercial brand owners wishing to translate requirements – both product and process specifications – to other parts of the supply chain. This is especially important as supply chains become more vertically integrated. Indeed, from the perspective of the firm, private standards and the certification sitting behind them can serve as mechanisms for safety and quality assurance. They can also facilitate traceability, standardization of products from a range of international suppliers, and transparency of production processes. Read more of this post

Vietnam, Netherlands enhance PPP in agriculture

The Netherlands has pledged an investment of 300,000 EUR over the 2010-2012 period to improve the sustainability of tra and basa fish rearing method in Vietnam.

The agriculture cooperation between Vietnam and the Netherlands under the public-private partnership (PPP), has seen positive development, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

MARD’s International Cooperation Department said the fisheries, cocoa and coffee industries have benefited the most from the cooperation. The Netherlands will help Vietnam become a full member of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). Both countries have agreed to seek funding for a programme to train quarantine officers and law makers in the European Union (EU) food safety and law. 

The Netherlands has pledged an investment of 300,000 EUR over the 2010-2012 period to improve the sustainability of tra and basa fish rearing method in Vietnam.

In addition, the Netherlands has proposed a programme on sustainable production and business development for Vietnam’s coffee industry. Donors are expected to contribute 47 percent of the 32 million EUR programme to be carried out until 2012.

A delegation of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation is on a week-long fact-finding tour to Vietnam until Jan. 24 to devise a new PPP project on cocoa’s sustainable development in Vietnam.

The two countries have also paid due attention to the government to government cooperation. The Netherlands is working on three proposals in this form regarding the planning of Vietnam’s slaughtering and meat processing system, boosting Vietnam’s potato production and protecting Vietnam’s domestic pig species from foreign diseases.

Vietnam: Binh Dinh, Farm whiteleg shrimp towards the sustainable development

According to the provincial sub-Department of Aquaculture, whitelegshrimp has been introduced into Binh Dinh since 2004 through supplying the broodstock of Hawaii Company in Phu My district and some other companies in Phu Yen province.
In 2010 alone, the whiteleg shrimp farming area of over 883 ha, accounting for 32 percent of the provincial farming area. Whiteleg shrimp production reached over 5,325 MT, accounting for 85 percent of total provincial commercial shrimp production. Some farming areas had the high yield of 12 MT per ha. Mr. Vo Dinh Tam, head of sub-Department of Aquaculture said due to the prediction of whiteleg shrimp farming was out of control, immediately it was introduced into Binh Dinh, the provincial fisheries sector farmed whiteleg shrimp towards the sustainable and environmental friendly development. Besides, shrimp farmers must strictly control the quality of broodstock prior to farming and strengthen the management and care for shrimp.
