Ben Tre: Bumper harvest and high price of blood cockle

Besides bumper harvest, farmers in Ben Tre Province are now selling blood cockle at VND 45,000 – 50,000 / kg nearly doubling last year.

According to Ben Tre Aquaculture Sub-department, at the current price, farmers can make a profit of approximated VND200,000,000/ha after 2 – year farming.

Unlike hard clam (Meretrix lyrata), which is rearingby the cooperatives in an area of 7,000 ha, blood cockle in Ben Tre is characterized by household scale. The juveniles mainly come from Kien Giang and Central provinces. Some households also import juveniles from Thailand, China which give higher productivity and better salty resistance compared to local juveniles.

The total area of blood cockle in Ben Tre is reported at 830 ha, mostly in Binh Dai district (600 ha).

The total output in 2011 is expect to hit an 8,000 ton, up 20% against 2010.
