Japan: Imports of shrimp increase by 8%

Japan imported 16,428 tonnes of prawns and shrimp i January, which is 8% more than the same month of 2010

The value of these imports increased by 12.9 per cent to JPY 13,362 million (USD 162.9 million), partly due to the 4.5 per cent increase in the average price of these crustaceans, which reached JPY 813 (USD 9.90) per kilogram.

Imports from Thailand amounted to 3,211 tonnes, 11.9 per cent more than in January last year. Imports fromIndonesia rose by 14.4 per cent to 2,832 tonnes, while those from Viet Nam fell by 5.3 per cent to 2,796 tonnes.

Overall, imports of these products from Russia,Greenland, Canada and Argentina, increased by 5.6 per cent to 1,851 tonnes.

Imports from Canada were the largest in terms of growth: 51 per cent to 656 tonnes, while shrimp imports from Argentina increased by 13.8 per cent to 569 tonnes.

By contrast, the volume of imports from Russia and Greenland declined compared with January last year.
